William Tan, 25, a marketing executive in the automation industry, was a man in blue for five and a half years.
As a police officer in a Neighbourhood Police Centre, the common cases William faced were family disputes, thefts and fighting – and fortunately, not of the dangerous gunshooting variety. Singapore is a safe country, he said.
In February this year, William made the switch to his current job. The interpersonal skills he acquired while resolving disputes between people on the street can now be put to use handling clients.
"I wanted a change in my life," he says of the switch. "The working hours as a police officer are long and we worked 12-hour shifts. I didn't have enough time for family and friends."
These days, on weekends, he gets to go out with family and friends and go to church, said William.
And maybe he has more time for cooking too, which is one of his favourite pastimes.
"I very much enjoy cooking for my friends, and I teach them also. I will bake cakes, cookies and make desserts like konnyaku jelly and agar agar for them," says William, who adds that he makes a mean banana cake.

Ms Jerrain Tay, 25, a buyer in the electronics industry, says she likes talking to people.
"If you like to talk to people, you'll either be in a sales or buying job," explains Jerrain.
She ended up picking the latter five years ago as she thought it would be easier for someone young and inexperienced. "In sales, you have to convince people, whereas in buying, you are letting people convince you!"
Working in electronics is good for Jerrain as she is quite a gadget person.
And yes, she says she can't wait to put her hands on an iPhone. "I like to get in touch with technology, anything from portable gadgets to high-end services to things like Internet protocol."
She is currently doing a part-time degree in business management, and if juggling work and studies is not tough enough already, Jerrain's husband has passed away and she has a five-year-old son to raise.
"Which is why I say, everyday is a challenge," says Jerrain in an upbeat tone. But eventually, "I do wish to settle down to something down that's more slow-paced".
"I hope to be a teacher at the kindergarten or childcare level," says Jerrain.
