Mr Zhang Jia Zhen, 25, who works as a Supervisor in his family's ship repair business, got hooked on salsa after hanging out at Movida at St James Power Station.
He can be found at the club - a nice place with great people, he says - about once a week, and is currently attending salsa lessons with his girlfriend.
"The steps are actually quite basic, compared to something like ballroom dancing, but I still have a hard time catching up!" says Jia Zhen, who reveals that he did not dance much before this.
At the work place, the young man stands out for, well, being young.
And that can make managing people a challenge for him. "Most of the workers are my father's age, in their 40s and 50s. Initially, I had a hard time telling them what to do. They were telling me what they should do instead," says Jia Zhen.
A bit of "courtship" was in order, so Jia Zhen made sure he joined them for tea breaks, buying drinks for them and reaching out to them to find out more about their families and backgrounds. He also learnt some basic Bahasa (Malay) so he could compliment them for good work by using their language, since many of them are Malaysians and Indonesians.
"As time went by, we started to recognise each other's strengths and weaknesses. Slowly, the bond builds, even though once in a while we will still bicker," he says.

Ms Felise Lee, 30, a Supply Chain Manager, has reason to be proud of herself. She was once promoted twice in a year and now heads a team of six.
Quite impressive for someone without a background in logistics and with, she revealed, less-than-stellar academic qualifications initially. Not that it has handicapped her. To stay ahead, she has been taking part-time courses, first getting a diploma, then a post-graduate diploma, and is now pursuing a Master's degree.
"Work is never an issue with me. Human relationships are what is important," says Felise.
"For example, if your relationship with the transport department is good, when you have an urgent assignment they can go out of the way to help you. Otherwise, they can just say they are unable to find a truck," she explains.
Outside of work, Felise can be found doing yoga and spinning at Planet Fitness.
She started working out regularly in the later half of last year, and is currently interested in yoga and spinning. The realisation that health and fitness are important came partly from seeing a friend her age die of cancer.
"As a working adult, you need to have a lot of self-discipline to balance work and play."
Why you should vote for me: "I'm a cheerful person who believes in solutions, not problems." |
