Phelps makes Olympic history
Aug 14, 2008
American swimmer Michael Phelps' legend became the most successful Olympian of all time with his 10th and 11th gold medals.
He has passed the previous record of nine jointly held by US swimmer Mark Spitz, track and field star Carl Lewis, Finnish distance runner Paavo Nurmi and Soviet gymnast Larysa Latynina. With five golds in Beijing, Phelps is still chasing the single Games record of seven held by Spitz, with three finals to go.
