The US House of Representatives passed a revamped US$700 billion (S$1 trillion) financial bailout bill amid increasing fears that the already sagging US economy could collapse without it.

The House voted 263-171 for the bill, which also incorporated a package of tax breaks for businesses, renewable energy development and the middle class, and measures to increase bank deposit insurance. The bill was sent to President George W Bush.
