Thai political turmoil spreads
Sep 02, 2008
Thailand's mass show of political discontent shows every sign of spreading, with protest leaders calling on major unions to join in. Protesters are vowing more disruptive action in their bid to force out the government of Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej.
The protests are being led by the main opposition party - the People's Alliance for Democracy. They say Samak's party is a front for former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, ousted in a 2006 military coup and now in London in exile. The ongoing unrest has hit the stock market and is threatening the country's lifeblood tourism sector.
